Repairs
Matthew is able to do almost any repair job. Most small repairs can be done with the piano in situ, and he is happy to do them as part of the regular tuning. This includes fixing sticking or slow keys, ineffective dampers, broken keytops and more.
Some more serious repairs require the action or the keys to be removed from the piano and taken away. This could be because the whole action is either stiff and slow or loose and rattling, the hammers may be very worn and sounding hard and ‘zingy’, or it may be that half the keytops are missing or broken and they all need replacing.
Pianos are very complicated things inside and there are innumerable ways they can break, but Matthew is able to fix most of them.
Regulation
Sometimes a piano may not be broken as such, but it’s just not playing quite as it should. The most common problem is playing a key once and the note plays twice in quick succession.
This isn’t caused by anything needing repair, just by the piano wearing over time, felt becoming compressed, and screws needing adjusting.
Other problems may occur due to regular wear and tear and most can be resolved. If you think that something isn’t playing quite as it should, Matthew will assess the problem and suggest what can be done.
